Gastroschisis & Omphalocele

  • Gastroschisis:
    • Characteristic: Defect typically located on the right side.
    • Defect Size: 2-3 cm.
    • Sac: Never present.
    • Gestational Age: Prematurity.
    • Umbilical Cord: Adjacent to the defect.
    • Herniated Viscera: Small bowel, stomach, colon.
    • Malrotation: Yes.
    • Bowel Character: Inflammatory, edematous.
    • Enteral Nutrition: Delayed.
    • Associated Abnormalities: Uncommon (10% atresia).
  • Omphalocele:
    • Characteristic: Sac always present, may be ruptured.
    • Defect Size: 2-15 cm.
    • Gestational Age: Term.
    • Umbilical Cord: Attached to the sac.
    • Herniated Viscera: Small bowel, stomach, colon, liver.
    • Malrotation: Yes.
    • Bowel Character: Normal.
    • Enteral Nutrition: Normal.
    • Associated Abnormalities: Common (50%).
